We are a foundation that works on spreading knowledge about avalanches and changing the attitude towards the risks we take associated with free skiing. After Mikaela Scherrer passed away in an avalanche the foundation was created by her brothers Axel and Gustav along with some close friends. Have a look around on our website to read more about us and feel free to join our Facebook feed where we update on a more regular basis!

About Skiers left
The Foundation Skiers Left was created by the brothers Axel and Gustav Scherrer and close friends of Mikaela Scherrer. On December 19th 2012 Mikaela was swept away by an avalanche in Verbier, Switzerland.
Mikaela was an experienced freerider who was well aware of the risks involved in the sport. She therefore made sure to take courses in avalanche safety, acknowledged her surroundings and always skied with safety equipment. Before Mikaela's accident she had gotten her first sponsorship and decided that she wanted to start competeing on a higher level. She had during her previous winters in the alps entered a couple of competitions and the skiing society saw her as a force to be reckoned with..
Why Skiers Left?
After Mikaela's first freeride competition in Bruson, a village close to Verbier, she got a new nickname: "Skiers Left". During her first run she decided to ski to the left, and not just a little bit. She somehow managed to miss the whole face of the competition. When she finally got down from the mountain she ended up in a small swiss village. Thanks to her ability to speak french and the help of two seven year old swiss boys, she managed to get a hold of a taxi and headed back to the competition. She quickly recharged, gave it her all and won the second run by a landslide.
Objectives
Skiers Left strives to achieve a higher safety awareness among those who reside in an alpine environment. By spreading knowledge we want to enlighten the importance of safety as well as the risks you expose yourself to by being on the mountain.
The development of security equipment has made the high-risk parts of the mountain more accesible, which means that we also need to develop our knowledge. There is no equipment that can erase the human factor on nature however, we need to learn how to use our equipment in the best way possible.
With the help of experienced mountain guides we will arrange classes in avalanche awareness. The classes will, for example, educate the participants to read the mountain, avoid unnecessary risks and the right actions to take if an accidentoccurs. Apart from this we will at all times spread information about the importance of safety equipment and the needed knowledge to ride safely.

Tierra Avalanche Academy
A lecture series about avalanche safety with one of Sweden’s greatest experts Mårten Johansson.
When we started our work with Skiers Left we needed help getting in to world of avalanche safety. Therefore we contacted Mårten Johansson, one of Sweden’s greatest experts on the subject. During our first meeting we explained that we are willing to work hard and fight to make sure that no one will end up in an avalanche accident. We all agreed that knowledge and understanding the risks are the most important aspects and that it shouldn’t have to cost anything to learn it. Mårten told us about Tierra Avalanche Academy, a lecture series that he organises every year. The entrance fee was 100 SEK and the interest was quite low. Usually there were around 10 persons attending and almost no one was from our target group. To make sure more young people would attend we made sure there was free entrance and the result couldn’t have been better. The first four lectures we sponsored, two in Stockholm, one in Gothenburg and one i Malmö were all crowded with a vast majority of people from out target group. That season we had around 400 people attending the lectures and listening to Mårten’s wisdom. Since we reached so many people we decided to keep sponsoring these lectures to make sure more could take part of this knowledge. The next year we extended the series with two lectures, one i Uppsala and one in Umeå and because of that an addition of 200 people could listen to Mårten for free. These six lectures are now something that we organise yearly together with Tierra, Åre Lavincenter and Naturkompaniet with the hope that even more people will learn about avalanche safety.
Tierra Avalanche Academy is a lecture series that’s older than Skiers Left but has become a vital part of our work. We chose to focus on these lectures because it’s an effective way to reach out to a lot of people in a cost efficient way. Mårten Johansson, one of the founders of Åre Lavincenter and our avalanche expert, talks about the problems around avalanches and how we relate to them. During the first hour of the lecture, Mårten talks about different kinds of avalanches and why we should watch out for them. The second hour, he teaches us how to adapt our ways of skiing and especially how we think and behave on the mountain in order to not end up in an avalanche.
The fact that we can offer this kind of education for free is all thanks to the donations we’ve received from all the fantastic people who believe in our work. We get a lot of requests for extra lectures och we need all the help we can get to make sure it happens!

Every day you are with us, but today we think about you a lot. We have now been around for five years, which means you have not been with us for five years. It is because of you we are, Skiers Left.
It's sad, touching, scary, beautiful and hard. We have reached so many. We are proud of what we have done. We believe - we made a difference.
At the same time it is mourning. We miss you. So much ❤️

Have you wanted to develop your avalanche skills but haven't really gotten around to booking a course yet? Now it's the time!
We at Skiers Left work to increase awareness and avalanche knowledge and as many of you probably know, we arrange avalanche lectures during the autumn to reach out to as many people as possible. However, we think it's time to actually send a bunch of motivated skiers or snowboarders on practical avalanche courses. More specifically, this means that you can attend an avalanche course and that we will cover the course fee. Kind of like a grant or a scholarship to develop your avalanche skills.
❄️ But wait, this sounds great, how does it work?
The application is closed
❄️ Okay but where should I send my application when it is finished?
Don’t need to be send anywhere just fill out this form online and submit: The applicaiton is closed check the latest updates on our Instagram or Facebook
❄️ Can anyone apply?
Yeah nah almost. Our target group is mainly young motivated skiers and snowboarders under the age of 25 who feel that attending an avalanche course is an important part of their development as a freerider. So if you are under 25 years old - great! If you are over 25 years old - apply anyways, we will then cover half the course fee.
❄️ Will you pay for accommodation, travel and lift passes?
No we do wont. We will only cover the cost of the avalanche training course itself. You’ll have to cover the costs of accommodation and lift pass.
❄️ What equipment do I need??
You need your own ski or snowboard equipment as well as your own avalanche equipment with shovel, probe and transceiver. Lift passes, ski clothes, helmet and first aid kits you’ll also need, but this is often specified in the course you have chosen. NOTE: also double check so that your insurance covers off-piste skiing.
Skiers Left will give contributions for private persons as well as compounds and organizations. The contributions are mainly intended to encourage alpine security. The applications that can be granted are for example tuitions for avalanche courses, contributions to safety equipment and more. We strive to distribute our contributions where they are most useful.
How do I apply for a grant?
At the moment we don't have any grants. For more info(@)skiersleft.com feel free to reach out to us.
